CLOVERLEAF PIZZA TAKES TOP HONORS –
SIGNATURE RECIPE NAMED “BEST PIZZA” AT 2009
NORTH AMERICAN PIZZA AND ICE CREAM SHOW®

(Clinton Township, March 2, 2009) – Metro-Detroiters are very familiar with the famed “Detroit Style” square pizza served at Cloverleaf Restaurant’s original Gratiot location in Eastpointe and at Cloverleaf Pizza Take Out & Delivery of Clinton Township and St. Clair Shores. On February 23, North America got a taste of the pie. Led by Cloverleaf Take Out & Delivery owner, Shawn Randazzo, Cloverleaf’s signature deep dish “Meat Supreme” pizza took top honors in the traditional pizza-making category during the annual Pizza Pizzazz Challenge™ at the North American Pizza and Ice Cream Show®. As first place winner they also received a cash prize of $7500.

A first-time competitor in the annual competition, Randazzo’s presentation of Cloverleafs’ deep dish “Meat Supreme” pizza – topped with pepperoni, ham, bacon and Italian sausage – beat out 58 competitors from across the USA and Canada. Entrants in the competition had to adhere strict guidelines, including using their signature dough and red sauce along with a combination of traditional pizza toppings. The pizza must also be a featured menu offering at their pizzeria. Submissions were judged by a panel of food experts based on the criteria of taste, appearance and marketability.

“I always have people coming in saying we should open a store here and there, or that they would like to open a Cloverleaf Pizza out of state because nothing compares to ours. To me winning this competition validates that,” commented Randazzo. His mentor and Cloverleaf founder, Gus Guerra developed the now famous square shaped ‘Detroit Style Pizza’ in 1946. Randazzo dedicates the award to Guerra’s memory. “Many pizzas in the area have all originated from Gus and his wife’s recipe. I am honored to credit the family with their contribution to our industry,” added Randazzo.

As part of the celebration, Cloverleaf Take Out & Delivery and Cloverleaf Restaurant are inviting their customers to “Save Some Green.” For a limited time only starting St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), customers will receive $3.00 off a large Meat Supreme Pizza (carry-out and dine-in orders). No coupon is necessary.
